How to fix problems running Indycar Racing II under Windows

The ideal option is to run the game under MS DOS. There will be no problems at all — the only thing you may have to do is find DOS drivers for your sound card.
For running under Windows there is a patch for the game, which you can download in the Downloads section. There you can also find out how to install it. But it is not that simple: this patch is designed for Win 95/98. You will not be able to launch the game under XP or 2000.

There are several ways out of this situation:

  1. Download the already installed version for Win 95/98 in the Downloads section.
  2. If you have Windows XP/2000, there is a program for running DOS software called VDMSound (http://ntvdm.cjb.net), which fixes all problems with launching the game and with sound.
  3. If you have Windows XP/2000, you can install DOS alongside your operating system — read how to install DOS under Win NT/2000/XP.
  4. Download the archive here (138 KB). Unpack all the files into the game folder and run the unpacked ICR2.BAT. The game must be the DOS version — a clean DOS version without the Windows patch. This option works under Win 98, 2000 and XP. There may be sound problems under 2000 and XP; look for good drivers for your sound card. Note! Sound is enabled in the game by default and the settings are unlikely to fit — turn the sound off (or configure it) in setup.exe so the game starts normally.
  5. Carve out an additional FAT32 partition on the hard drive and install Win 9x, for example Win 98 (for the case when the machine has one or several partitions and they are all NTFS). Naturally, install it as an upgrade. PowerQuest Partition Magic will help you carve out the partition — it does not destroy data while working with partitions. Do it like this: first shrink the main partition at its end, then create a new FAT32 or FAT partition (logical, not primary) in the free space.
  6. If your computer's CPU runs at 500 MHz or more, the best option is to install a virtual machine under Win 2000 (XP) and install DOS, Win 95/98 or anything else that has DOS inside it. As of today I know of two programs that can help you with this — Connectix Virtual PC and VMWare. I have not tried installing the game in the second one. I will say one thing: the first is far better than the second.
