16-04-2004 :: Today the Internet Indycar League turns exactly one year old! Congratulations to all League members! Thanks to everyone who supported us through the year and did not let the brilliant creation of Papyrus, Indycar Racing II, die. Long live Indycar!
16-04-2004 :: Dear IIL members. Right after the championship ends, the IIL will hold its third Indy 500. All former and current League drivers are invited. Indy 500 qualifying runs from 20.04 to 26.04, and the Indy 500 race runs from 27.04 to 03.05. The rule differences at Indy compared to regular League rounds are small, but they do exist. Namely:
1. 50% race distance.
2. Qualifying and race results are sent separately.
3. Qualifying result submission format: an F2 screenshot after finishing qualifying (checkered flag) and the qualifying statistics after it ends. That's all.
4. The race result submission format is unchanged (exactly as at regular League rounds).
In an emergency you may send your race result during the qualifying period. Any qualifying results sent during the race period will not be counted. Drivers who fail to qualify are still admitted to the race.
13-04-2004 :: TILL13 took an absolute victory at the Vancouver round! Congratulations! The results of Leonardo and Al were not counted, as they did not comply with the rules. Alex could not meet the 90% distance requirement in the race, so in the end only madlopt scored points besides TILL. The championship title is practically in Leonardo's hands, but TILL13 and madlopt still have chances. If TILL13 scores 21 points and Leonardo finishes 5th, the championship goes to TILL on the greater number of wins. madlopt's chances are purely theoretical: the 15-point gap could only be closed if he wins and scores 22 points while Leonardo finishes 7th. But given the number of participants at the recent rounds, that is unlikely to happen. At the moment only madlopt and Leonardo have exceeded the 10-round limit — under the new rules only the best 10 round results count — but both madlopt and Leonardo have three rounds where they scored no points at all, so in any case this will not affect their totals. Desperados Indycar Racing Team has overtaken NASCRAP racing in the team standings, and it looks like the situation there will not change any more.
07-04-2004 :: madlopt (Megarace Team): "It has been a troubled season for our team; we ourselves expected more. Winning the team standings was always a long shot for us, but we could have won the championship. Now that is practically impossible. The gap to Leonardo can only shrink if he fails to start, and that is unlikely to happen. Still, the fight is not over — I want to secure second place in the standings, and there I have two serious rivals: TILL13 and Denton."
07-04-2004 :: Leonardo (Desperados Indycar Racing Team): "Well, there it is: first the championship debut — then a first win (MICHIGAN), and then a first pole (Lausitzring)... could a first title really be next??? I don't think anyone doubts any more that we will win the team cup, but who will be champion??? To be honest, I expected much fiercer resistance from Megarace Team... In Vancouver we will be there at full strength and will try to prove that right now our team has no equals!"
06-04-2004 :: The 10th round of the League at the Lausitzring has finished. The absolute winner was Leonardo! Congratulations! Leonardo took his first pole position at this round! Thanks to that, Desperados Indycar Racing Team closed right up on NASCRAP racing in the team standings. Glor-Finn-Dale led a race for the first time and finished on the podium for the second time in a row! The main title contender Leonardo has pulled 31 points clear of the chasing group led by madlopt. With two rounds to go, that is a serious gap — the title may well be decided in Vancouver. Meanwhile madlopt, Denton and TILL are separated by a single point each (101, 100, 99).
01-04-2004 :: Leonardo (Desperados Indycar Racing Team): "A great result! My team-mate, as he promised at the team's training camp, won the round in Detroit. And on top of that I helped the team take the first ONE-TWO IN HISTORY!!! I clearly lacked experience. The track was slippery — the whole car kept sliding away; once I barely stopped right up against the wall (on fresh tyres after a pit stop I just couldn't stop)... I am sorry Megarace Team could not make the start for reasons so far unknown to us — I think the fight would have been much tougher. It's also a pity that the man we were supposed to crown after this championship didn't start at this round; he has decided to switch to two-wheeled mustangs..."
31-03-2004 :: Another League round has been held, in Detroit. Desperados Indycar Racing Team took an absolute victory at the Grand Prix! Congratulations! It is the first time in League history that one team has so totally dominated a round. TILL13 won pole and took the race victory, followed in both qualifying and the race by Leonardo. Glor-Finn-Dale reached the podium for the first time in his career! Sadly, we did not see VALVe Rally Team at the start. After the departure of the main title contender shurikus, four drivers at once have a shot at the championship: Leonardo, TILL13, madlopt and Denton.
24-03-2004 :: Our League has a new entry! VALVe Rally Team has filed an application. Two drivers will race for the team: Al and DoubleHead. Both will use a Reynard chassis, a Honda engine and Firestone tyres. Welcome to the debutants!
23-03-2004 :: The eighth round of the League in Phoenix has finished. The Road America results repeated themselves. Once again shurikus won qualifying, won the race and set the track record. Congratulations!!! The top four finishers exactly mirror the previous round: shurikus, Leonardo, madlopt, Denton. Unfortunately Glor-Finn-Dale was unable to start the race. TILL13 did not take part in the round and lost too many points; now he has practically no title chances left. Denton, madlopt and Leonardo have somewhat better ones, though shurikus has pulled quite far ahead and wresting the title from him now is a task of monumental difficulty. This is the first time in the IIL that one driver has led the standings for so long (7 rounds in a row).
18-03-2004 :: Leonardo (Desperados Indycar Racing Team): "I can't believe it! I'm on the podium again! Shurikus was running roughly at the pace of my race leader, but, as madlopt may have noticed while reviewing the replay, I had to pit right before the final lap because of a broken front spoiler. I was lucky to stay on the lead lap, since my pit box is located right past the finish line! And so, thanks to consistency and luck, I moved up to 2nd place in the championship!"
16-03-2004 :: Attention!!! A config is required for the Phoenix race; you can download it in the 'Download' section or here.
16-03-2004 :: One of the toughest rounds of the championship, at Road America, has finished. Its absolute winner was shurikus! Congratulations. The ex-champion last won a pole also at Road America, at his victorious final round of the first championship. Moreover, shurikus set a new track record, beating the old one (held by TILL13) by almost a second. It is shurikus's first record in the League. A record-small gap to the polesitter was registered: TILL13 trailed shurikus in qualifying by just 48 thousandths of a second. Glor-Finn-Dale, TILL13 and Alex could not start the race. For TILL this means serious points losses in the title fight. His team-mate Leonardo, though a long way behind, came home second, which allowed him to overtake his team-mate and take second place in the standings.
10-03-2004 :: TILL13 (Desperados Indycar Racing Team): "It was a difficult weekend... in qualifying I managed to find decent settings at the last moment; I think an even better result was possible with them... in the race things went somewhat worse... I was running faster than the bots and pulling away, but reckoning I would soon catch the backmarkers and get stuck behind them again, I decided to ease off and save fuel. So by the end of the lap-20s the bots started catching me; I turned the turbo boost back up and pushed flat out, yet the bots still kept clawing back time from me bit by bit... right before the pit entry I caused a small pile-up: braking into the corner, my rear end snapped downwards and one of the rivals sheared off my front spoiler (thankfully only that)... while I was turning around and refuelling, everyone swept past and lapped me... from then on I was driving on my own... on lap 76 another pit stop awaited me; not knowing the exact fuel consumption I had to fill up with a margin (about 10 gallons too many, as it turned out)... right under the checkered flag the leader lapped me a second time — and so this hard race ended... taking a podium away from this round is a big achievement for me... and if you also consider that my team-mate won the round (by the way, taking this opportunity, I congratulate him on a magnificent result — frankly, given the disagreements over setups that arose at this round, I did not expect such a result from him; he surprised me in the pleasant sense, hopefully not for the last time), then for the team as a whole the result is simply splendid... Next on the schedule is Elkhart Lake; the round suits us on the whole, but there is one fast corner there — what is it called again? The Carousel? Yes, I believe so — in past seasons it was rather tricky to get through... we'll see how it goes this time."
09-03-2004 :: An interview with Michigan race winner Leonardo: "I didn't expect it — especially considering that 7 laps from the finish I collided with Fernandez while putting him a second lap down and lost about 30 seconds (Tracy, who was a lap down in second place, closed to within 23 seconds of me), and that I set up the car myself — separately for qualifying, separately for the race! It certainly feels wonderful to stand on the top step of the podium... Thanks to everyone who supported me... I am insanely happy."
09-03-2004 :: An official statement by the China Dragon Team:
"1) Due to severe financial difficulties the team is temporarily suspending its participation in the championship, presumably for half a year. There is hope that in this time we will manage to find sponsors and renew our technical base.
2) The team urgently needs a driver for the rounds. The team guarantees full support in testing.
3) If a driver can be found, the team will not stop competing, and driver Beijing may also take part in some races. For now Beijing is only able to work in testing."
09-03-2004 :: Leonardo (Desperados Indycar Racing Team) must have seen it coming when he said: "OUR TEAM will become a fearsome force capable of sweeping everything aside on the way to victory...". A sensation in the League!!! Season debutant Leonardo has won the race in Michigan! Congratulations! The driver's League debut is reminiscent of shurikus, who also started weakly and ended up finishing the championship in first place. Qualifying was won by madlopt — nobody could get near his time — but madlopt was unable to start the race, badly damaging his championship position as a result. shurikus once again came home second; the ex-champion keeps steadily taking first and second places in the races and so far leads the championship confidently. After Michigan, madlopt, Harder and Denton are tied on points, with 60 each.
04-03-2004 :: The results of the Cleveland round have been reviewed, and with the agreement of all round participants the results of Denton and Harder have been counted.
03-03-2004 :: An interview with Leonardo: "I am very sorry I could not send my result, but it was outside the points zone anyway. By the evening I was so tired that my nerves were at breaking point — hence the mistakes, collisions, tow trucks and so on. At the next round I will try to show everything I am capable of, all the more so as I am starting to get used to ovals, and maybe OUR TEAM will become a fearsome force capable of sweeping everything aside on the way to victory (well said)."
03-03-2004 :: An interview with Cleveland race winner TILL13: "In qualifying we failed to beat the track record; more than that, we couldn't even get within respectable range of it... the record is simply phenomenal... my fast lap in qualifying wasn't ideal — there was one gross error: I took one of the fast corners too quickly and as a result had to widen my line and run off the asphalt onto the grass... I think around 0.5 seconds were lost there... still, despite that mistake, another pole was taken... In the race the car behaved simply superbly over the whole distance... the car got quicker and quicker as the tank emptied... on a full tank the pace was on average around 1.05... which was quite enough to pull away from the rivals confidently... on lap 15 I had to start lapping backmarkers, which didn't go very well... on the long straights the bots looked much better than me and pulled away, so it was hard to pass them under braking into the corner... our only substantial advantage was in the fast corners, but overtaking there is simply impossible... so I had to drive carefully. Having grown used to the fast pace, at one point my nerves did give way and I got spun around, but thanks to the track layout's peculiarities the car was not damaged and I continued the race — though this time I no longer risked passing at every opportunity, and only went for a move when I was one hundred percent sure of it... A pity my team-mate could not start the race — I think he had a decent chance of finishing in the top three here... the next round is Michigan... I hope we manage to perform there at the highest level, even though our car is not well suited to tracks of that kind."
02-03-2004 :: The fifth round of the League, in Cleveland, has been held. TILL13 took an absolute victory at the round! Congratulations! TILL13 led from qualifying all the way to the race finish. The Desperados IRT driver improved the previous official track record — set by sim_tek in the first championship — by more than 2 seconds. The unofficial Cleveland record still belongs to shurikus's mentor Quick. With this win TILL13 finally burst into the leading championship group and passed madlopt in the drivers' standings. Considering the difficulty of the track, driver Glor-Finn-Dale (Elven Rescue team) made a decent debut, collecting 12 points for 4th place in the race.
26-02-2004 :: Leonardo's car has received a slightly updated livery; you can see it on the Desperados Indycar Racing Team page.
25-02-2004 :: Leonardo (Desperados Indycar Racing Team): "The round turned out terribly hard — I couldn't cope with the tyre wear and drove with 2 pit stops, but nevertheless set a decent time, which is encouraging! I managed to find the perfect tyre-pressure balance for maximum speed on a light car... If I had known I would end up a couple of seconds short, I would have pushed harder on the final laps — but alas, I thought I would be somewhere near last in the race."
24-02-2004 :: The China Dragon Team is very pleased with its fourth-place result in the Motegi race. You could say the driver simply got lucky. Around mid-race there was a big accident, and Beijing miraculously managed to steer around the pile-up of cars. Because of the accident all his nearest rivals dropped a lap behind; the tyres gripped well and Beijing reached the finish without problems... The team has already begun testing at Cleveland and has run into big handling difficulties. The tyres are not gripping the track at all. Work on the suspension settings will continue.
24-02-2004 :: madlopt (Megarace Team): "For me this is truly a breath of fresh air! I had begun to lose hope of winning the championship. In the race, twenty laps from the finish, I relaxed and collided with Dominguez, losing about 20 seconds; fortunately I managed to finish first even with a damaged wing. The key at Motegi was to set the car up for minimal tyre wear. My team-mate Alex didn't manage it and I couldn't help him in any way, so he made two pit stops and finished a lap down. The team has already packed for Cleveland — there is not a second to lose. I know shurikus is already there."
24-02-2004 :: Another League round has been held at Motegi! The winner of both the race and qualifying was madlopt, who thereby moved up to second place in the drivers' standings. TILL13 could not take the win for Honda at its home track, but still came home second; his team-mate and season debutant Leonardo drove an excellent race, finishing just 2.5 seconds behind TILL — impressive progress. Another debutant, Beijing, also pleased: despite a frustrating qualifying penalty he pulled himself together and finished fourth! Harder put in a strong qualifying, but in the race he took only fifth place. Ex-champion of the League shurikus did not take part in the round; NASCRAP racing's colours were defended by Denton alone, who for unknown reasons was unable to start the race.
20-02-2004 :: Rules for the Windows version of Indycar Racing II have appeared. Everyone who wants to use it, please read them on the rules page.
20-02-2004 :: China Dragon Team spent yesterday testing its only car, and today presented the livery of its race machine, which can be seen on the team page. A lot of setup work was done in testing. Beijing drove about 140 test laps at Motegi. The car held the track well throughout the tests and showed an average speed of 236.500. Unfortunately, the team failed to reduce the excessive wear of the right front tyre and will be forced to make extra pit stops in the race. And that is not good news at all, since very little time was devoted to pit stop practice. A race simulation was also run, and the inexperienced Beijing could not even complete 20 laps because of a terrible crash involving about half the field.
19-02-2004 :: Another addition of racers to the IIL! An entry has been filed by team Elven Rescue from the land of Rivendell — not everyone knows where that is. Two drivers will race for the team: Glor-Finn-Chip and Glor-Finn-Dale (better known as Fonarick). Both will use a Lola chassis, a Honda engine and Firestone tyres.
17-02-2004 :: ATTENTION!!! There was a mix-up with the lap count at Motegi. The Motegi round is therefore cancelled and will be re-run starting today; all remaining rounds on the schedule shift one week later. The qualifying results stand and can no longer be improved. Send only the race. Those who already drove the race with 80 laps earlier may send that result now. Those who did not send a qualifying result by the 16th no longer have the right to take part in the round. The new config can be downloaded in the 'Download' section or here; you MUST drive the race with it. If there are problems again, note that the race distance is 80 laps and nothing else — if need be, adjust the distance percentage in the game options. Meanwhile madlopt won qualifying at Motegi, and Beijing made his debut at the track.
16-02-2004 :: There is a new Chinese team in our League! China Dragon Team, whose owner and driver will be Beijing. For now the team's only driver will use a Lola chassis, a Honda engine and Firestone tyres; the team starts competing right away at the current round at Motegi.
13-02-2004 :: The day before yesterday Denton and madlopt took part in the RNC championship tests at the Atlanta track. For madlopt it was his first try; the driver was not counting on anything, while Denton was seriously trying to obtain an RNC licence and finished the test run second. madlopt trailed Denton's best time by ~3 seconds. madlopt: "I am by no means going to leave the IIL — this was more of an amusement. I won Atlanta in the IIL last season, yet at the stock car tests I was the slowest; the difference between these cars is enormous. I won't manage to get the licence this season, and even if I do, I will race in two championships at once — but the IIL will always come first."
11-02-2004 :: Denton, a NASCRAP racing driver, took part in the test runs of the RNC NASCAR championship with the aim of obtaining a racing licence. As the driver himself states, he is not going to leave the IIL and at worst will race in two championships at once. Reigning IIL champion madlopt is also keen to get into the RNC tests.
10-02-2004 :: Shurikus strengthened his championship lead by winning the third round of the League at Laguna Seca. Congratulations! Continuing his pole streak, TILL13 took pole position; unfortunately he did not start the race, dropping all the way to second-to-last in the standings as a result. Denton, shurikus and madlopt qualified very close together: Denton (who qualified second) and madlopt (fourth) are separated by just 103 thousandths of a second. Thanks to TILL missing the race, Harder moved up to third place; debutant Leonardo had a decent round and currently sits 4th in the drivers' standings. An administrative note: Denton was penalized 1 lap in the race for a missing F1 screenshot; disputed positions among drivers who finished the same number of laps down were decided, per the rules, by qualifying results.
10-02-2004 :: Attention!!! A page for submitting your result is now available, and I recommend sending results through it. The organizer will send you the password on request; use your League nickname as the login. If there are any problems, you can still send your result by e-mail as before.
06-02-2004 :: Flash interviews with the participants of the Nazareth round.
Question: "Leonardo, how did you manage to finish on the podium?"
Leonardo: "I honestly don't know... To be honest, by mid-race I was starting to fall asleep (the monotony of the oval), but then thanks to Burda I woke up (it was hard not to wake up after being rammed), and after the pit stop I decided not to take risks and just drove to bring it home — and so I did."
Question: "Leonardo, share the secret — how did you keep your pace in the middle of the race, when many faded and drove slower and slower?"
Leonardo: "The whole secret is in the tyres (I'll reveal it only to my team-mate, if he wants it, of course)!"
Question: "madlopt, how do you explain such a difference between you and your team-mate — last season you finished in first and last places?"
madlopt: "Well, right now Alex is ahead of me in the standings (heh heh). In general it is hard for us to benefit from being in one team. Alex uses a different chassis and different controls (keyboard); our setups are completely different and don't suit each other."
06-02-2004 :: Due to an internet-related error, Denton's result was not included in the final classification of the Nazareth Grand Prix. My apologies for the slip — it will not happen again.
05-02-2004 :: Another round of the third championship has been held, at Nazareth! The race winner was the first champion of the League, shurikus! Congratulations! None of his rivals could even get close to him. The ex-champion has really picked up his pace: second place at Long Beach and victory at Nazareth put him at the top of the drivers' standings, and NASCRAP racing at the top of the team standings. TILL13 set a phenomenal qualifying time, improving the League record by almost 7 mph! But he and Alex of Megarace Team could not start the race, which cost TILL13 the championship lead. Besides shurikus's win, the race delivered one more surprise, and its name is Leonardo. The debutant, whose Long Beach round had ended in failure, brought home second place at Nazareth! Congratulations! Almost all drivers had handling problems in the race — the Nazareth track is full of surprises.
27-01-2004 :: New driver Michael has entered his team, MIG TEAM. The driver will race a Lola chassis with a Honda engine; his tyre choice is unusual: Goodyear. There are now two drivers in the championship using Goodyear.
27-01-2004 :: The first round of the third IIL championship at Long Beach has finished! The round, dedicated to Al Unser, was won by TILL13, last season's runner-up. TILL13 took an absolute victory at the round, setting a qualifying record. At last we have seen the return of the League's first champion shurikus, who shadowed TILL13 all weekend long. Luck deserted debutant and TILL's team-mate Leonardo: he managed to qualify fifth but finished more than 3 laps down, and under the new rules he receives no points for the race. Hang in there, Leonardo — everything is still ahead! Reigning League champion madlopt was plagued by steering problems all weekend and could not even start the race. Denton and Harder received 10-second penalties for missing qualifying screenshots. This Long Beach round set a record for the number of participants, and considering that sim_tek and michael_quick are on their way, the third championship promises to be the most interesting yet.
20-01-2004 :: The third IIL championship has started! Hurrah! The League has new arrivals. A new driver, Leonardo, has signed for TILL's team Desperados Indycar Racing Team and brought along a new sponsor, Gauloises. TILL13 stays faithful to the Reynard chassis with a Honda engine, while debutant Leonardo will use a Lola and a Ford — the championship-winning chassis-engine combination. There is also a new team, Traur, with driver 'Alpiysky' from... Nicaragua, running a Lola chassis and a Ford engine. Harder entered the same configuration for the third championship (Penske-Honda). Alex, a Megarace Team driver, also changed nothing (Penske-Ford), while his team-mate, winner of the second championship madlopt, decided to return to the Reynard chassis. Ford engines seem to be firmly established at Megarace Team, but for tyres madlopt picked Goodyear, whereas none of the current drivers had ever raced on them, considering them inferior to Firestone. It looks like madlopt will be the only one to choose Goodyear.
19-01-2004 :: A request to all participants: urgently send your entries (nickname, team name, chassis, engine, tyres) to the organizer, or post them on the forum.
13-01-2004 :: The new rules for the third IIL championship have been finalized! All championship participants, please look through the rules. The main changes are highlighted in italics. Briefly, the rule changes for the third championship:
1) A driver's best 10 rounds out of 12 count towards the standings.
2) Sending the replay of the first lap of the race (pace lap) has been added.
3) Classification of results at the finish: a driver is not classified if he completed less than 90% of the leader's race distance in laps.
08-01-2004 :: The start of the third championship is set for January 20. If the results of the vote on the Grand Prix format favour the "Friday-to-Thursday" option, the first round will begin on January 23. Once again, happy New Year and merry Christmas to everyone!
30-12-2003 :: The last race of the outgoing year has been held at Indianapolis! The second winner of the Borg Warner Trophy in the IIL is sim_tek!!! Congratulations on the victory! Denton of NASCRAP racing improved his own Indianapolis record. More details on the results here. Happy upcoming New Year to everyone!
19-12-2003 :: A vote has been announced in the IIL, and all racers are invited to take part. Also, starting today, a non-championship race is being held at Indianapolis (running 19–29 December). More details on its rules here.
17-12-2003 :: An interview with the winner of the final round, TILL13: "It is nice to win the last round of the championship... even though it should have been the first one... during the GP there were no problems at all — as always this season on the road courses... it is a great pity we could not win the championship, though I think it was lost from the very start: on the ovals we had big handling problems, hence the large number of retirements through accidents... we only avoided losing a lot of points thanks to the low activity of the other championship participants... well then, the 2nd season of the championship is over; it was won by madlopt — my congratulations to him — and now we must start preparing for the next championship. I hope we manage to solve the handling problem on the ovals without losing speed on the road courses... in short, I congratulate everyone on the end of the 2nd season, thank everyone for taking part in the championship, and hope for greater activity in the future."
16-12-2003 :: A review of the second Internet Indycar League championship.
Initially as many as 9 drivers entered the second championship, promising serious competition and a more interesting season. But nothing came of team Kraz Racing except the entry itself; Newnapier Team tried but never managed to take part in even one round of the League; and ex-champion shurikus of NASCRAP racing was likewise unable to defend his title. The situation was somewhat improved by super-debutant Harder of Unaired Pilots. The team debuted at the Road America round, and Harder immediately managed to take the win. It was not his last: the driver drove a superb Grand Prix in Australia, adding a pole to his second victory and setting the track record. The fight for the title was between madlopt and TILL13, mainly because the other drivers missed many rounds. They fought very hard, snatching the lead from each other at every round. madlopt was superior to TILL13 on the ovals, while TILL13 in turn set records on the road courses. With 4 rounds to go madlopt led by 8 points; 2 ovals and 2 road courses remained, and in that situation TILL13 had to win the upcoming race at New Hampshire at any cost. And he did it, putting madlopt a full lap down in the process. Next, to keep his title chances alive, TILL13 needed to win in Australia and Monterrey, bearing in mind that madlopt was stronger on the superspeedways. But... TILL13 was unable to take part in two rounds in a row and lost the championship: for the first time, Megarace Team driver madlopt became champion of the Internet Indycar League. NASCRAP racing driver Denton impressed, taking his first pole and first win of the championship by beating madlopt at Fontana. sim_tek took part in only three races, but in two of them he struck with two victories! The second Megarace Team driver Alex had a pale championship — still no wins or poles; whereas last season his consistency allowed him to beat even TILL13, this time he finished the championship last.
And about the records. The record number of poles in the championship went to madlopt and TILL13, 5 each. TILL13 set the record for wins in a season (5). The record points total (202) and laps led (292) belong to madlopt. sim_tek's result stands out as the most efficient: three races, two wins, 56 points. Many new track records were set in the second championship. TILL13 holds 8 track records (3 of them on ovals), madlopt 6 (all on ovals). Denton added the Fontana record to his Indianapolis one. And Harder set the record in Australia. In the drivers' national championship Russia is the undisputed leader, since there are only two Ukrainian drivers. The best chassis of the championship is still the Reynard. In the engine standings, though, Honda overtook Ford. The tyre standings once again never really happened: all participants chose Firestone yet again. The second championship is over — to be continued...
16-12-2003 :: The second Internet Indycar League championship is over! At the final round in Monterrey, TILL13 took an absolute victory, routing Megarace Team, which was at last present at full strength. TILL13 set a new track record (the previous one was also his), set the record for wins in a season (previously held by ex-champion shurikus), and achieved the best result of his career so far (2nd place in the season standings). Congratulations!
15-12-2003 :: On December 12, the second NASCRAP racing driver, ex-IIL champion shurikus, held a test session on the Vancouver street circuit as part of his "stretching the bones" programme. Having covered about a dozen and a half laps, wrecking his car three times along the way, the driver managed to post a time of 57.200. More testing to follow.
10-12-2003 :: An interview with the winner of the latest round, Denton: "I am very glad I was able to win this round. Strangely enough, the setup turned out to be not the best. There was heavy understeer, especially on cold tyres. On top of that, because of the gearbox settings there was a risk of wrecking the engine, so I constantly had to watch its temperature. The bots, fortunately, behaved quite sensibly and did not try to stay on the lead lap at any cost. I also want to congratulate madlopt on the title — he had an excellent season. A pity I could not give him a real fight."
09-12-2003 :: An interview with the newly crowned IIL champion madlopt: "I have achieved my goal! I am the champion! My joy knows no bounds! Thanks to everyone who supported me! Thanks to my rivals, and especially TILL13, for victory over such strong drivers is worth three times as much! Keep pushing! As for the race, I am a little annoyed: I had serious steering problems that could not be fixed during the Grand Prix — if the race had been on a road course, I simply would not have made it past the first corner. A pity, because I felt I could win at Fontana — it is one of my favourite tracks."
09-12-2003 :: The 11th round of the League, in California, dedicated to Greg Moore, has finished. The fight for the champion's crown is over!!! TILL13 was unable to take part in the round, and madlopt, despite an unsuccessful race, becomes the Internet Indycar League champion ahead of schedule! And the pole and the race were won, for the first time in his life, by Denton! The NASCRAP racing driver had already won the non-championship Indy 500, but these are his first pole and victory in the championship. Congratulations!
03-12-2003 :: Unaired Pilots has presented the livery of its car. You can see it in the team's profile.
02-12-2003 :: An interview with Australia race winner Harder: "The track in Australia is quite familiar to me, and to some extent it is one of my favourite tracks. An attempt to drive with braking assistance brought no success (around ~1'35), but as soon as I got the hang of the braking myself and managed a clean fast lap, the result appeared at once (~1'32). I felt I was unlikely to improve my time seriously, so I decided to focus my efforts on the race. Having started well, I was able to break into the lead, though a couple of laps later I still had to let several rivals through. I tried not to take risks, having set myself the goal of not wrecking the car before the finish. And I practically succeeded! Only at the end of the last lap was there an unfortunate brush with the wall, which, though it affected the handling, still let me finish without going a lap down. I am very happy with both this win and the pole, because I felt I had it in me to drive well — and I did it! A pity TILL13 was not in the race; I am sure he would have shown a worthy result."
02-12-2003 :: The 10th round of the championship, in Australia, has finished! The winner of the race and qualifying was Harder, taking his second win of the season and his first record-setting pole. Congratulations! The championship leaders did not particularly distinguish themselves: madlopt finished second, 2 laps down, while TILL13 did not take part in the round at all, badly hurting his chances of the title.
02-12-2003 :: The VDMSound program for running DOS games under Windows XP/2000 has appeared in the 'Download' section.
28-11-2003 :: ATTENTION! Our championship now has a whole section on the mc-laren.ru forum — read it here.
26-11-2003 :: An interview with NASCRAP racing driver Denton: "All in all the race was terrible. At first everything seemed to be going well — I was leading with an advantage of ~5.5 sec. Around lap 60 I decided to change tyres, as they were already fairly worn. When I came out of the pits, cars started putting me a lap down; I tried to let them by politely, but the bots literally went berserk, driving as if I weren't on the track at all. The result: a spin; I had barely got back on track and driven a couple of laps — spin no. 2 and a broken spoiler. After that I just cruised to the finish."
26-11-2003 :: An interview with Megarace Team driver madlopt: "I am glad I finished second. After a race like that I wasn't hoping for second place. All the problems began after the pit stop: the car's handling changed drastically and in the corners I was literally flying into the wall. While I was lapping a group of backmarkers I couldn't hold the car and there was an accident; then I exceeded the pit lane speed limit and got a penalty. The result — finishing 2 laps down."
25-11-2003 :: Another League round has been held, in New Hampshire. The winner was TILL13, who cut his deficit to madlopt to 5 points — congratulations! Harder beat Denton in the race and moved up to 3rd in the standings. The pole went to madlopt with a record time; TILL13 was only 74 thousandths of a second behind — the smallest gap to a polesitter ever recorded in the IIL.
24-11-2003 :: The 'Download' section is now fully operational! New tracks have been added: Road Atlanta, Sebring, Watkins Glen, Imola, Australia with new textures, and Brands Hatch without objects.
24-11-2003 :: ATTENTION! The location of our championship's forum thread has changed. It is now here.
21-11-2003 :: Everything in the 'Download' section should be working now, except the tracks. The tracks — both old and new — should be up next week.
18-11-2003 :: A tense moment is brewing in the championship. Only 4 rounds remain until the end, and it is already clear that one of the two leaders will win it: TILL13 or madlopt. The other drivers have unfortunately missed too many rounds to claim the title, though we expect a scrap for 3rd place between Denton, sim_tek and Harder. TILL13 is showing stunning results on the road courses, while madlopt is superior on the ovals, particularly the superspeedways. The next round is at New Hampshire, where in the last championship TILL13 took pole and finished second, with madlopt finishing 3rd just 4.6 seconds behind. Then comes Australia, where the League has not yet raced but where TILL13 will obviously have the advantage; then Fontana, where madlopt can win; and Monterrey, where TILL13 will most likely be first. madlopt's current advantage is 8 points, so the New Hampshire round could decide the championship. But this is all just speculation and guesswork — let's see how it actually plays out. After all, nobody wants to sit on the sidelines. Harder has already shown he can win; Denton, who won the Indy 500, can also rattle the leaders' nerves; and if the experienced sim_tek manages to take part in the closing races, the second championship will have a very interesting finish.
18-11-2003 :: The League round in Texas has been held! The championship lead changes hands again! The winner of the race and of qualifying (with a record) was madlopt, who moves to the top of the championship. NASCRAP racing has finally solved the steering problems on Denton's car — he very nearly took pole — while League champion shurikus still fails to appear at the start.
14-11-2003 :: It turns out the bots are too fast in Texas. Nothing can be done — the round has already started. We will know better next time.
14-11-2003 :: The team pages in the 'Teams' menu are almost ready. If any information in them is wrong, write to me. If you have screenshots you would like to see on your team's page, send them in.
11-11-2003 :: Another League round has finished, at Mid-Ohio. The championship lead has changed hands yet again. The absolute winner of the round was TILL13, with record results in both qualifying and the race! Congratulations! TILL13 now leads madlopt by one point. The championship fight is closer than ever. For the second time in a row NASCRAP racing driver Denton has had a disastrous round — his car suffers constant steering column problems. Rumour has it everything should be back to normal by the next round. Also worth noting is second place for Harder, driving only his second race in the League.
04-11-2003 :: A sensation! The race at Road America was won by debutant Harder!!! Congratulations! The Elkhart Lake track is one of the hardest in the championship — even experienced drivers frequently make mistakes there. Qualifying was won by madlopt; the record qualifying time was set by TILL13, but he was penalized, as was Denton, for missing qualifying statistics. Denton, in turn, also produced a sensational qualifying result.
29-10-2003 :: ATTENTION! The site has moved to a new host, http://workabout.com.ua/icr; a redirect is in place at the old one for now. The 'Download' section is temporarily out of order.
27-10-2003 :: ATTENTION! The championship break is over. Tomorrow (October 28) the Road America round starts.
23-10-2003 :: In the 'About the game' section, the program for setting up DOS under Windows NT/2000/XP and its instructions have been updated. In theory there should be no problems with this version.
22-10-2003 :: ATTENTION ALL RACERS! In case you cannot send your result to my mailbox for whatever reason, send it to the other one: internet_indycar_league@mail15.com. Best of all, send it straight there, to mail15 — but no harm done if the result goes to the old address.
22-10-2003 :: An interview with madlopt: "It is hard, after you have won, to learn that you are actually second — especially in Michigan. But still, sim_tek is the winner, not me. I congratulate him and his team on the victory! I had an incident with Adrian Fernandez that cost me about 20 seconds — exactly what I lacked for the win. But far from everything is lost: the championship fight is in full swing, I am still the leader, this season I have a real shot at the title and I will do everything to take it."
22-10-2003 :: ATTENTION! The results of the Michigan race have been reviewed. The winner is now sim_tek! Congratulations — sim_tek moves up to 3rd in the championship! The pole and track record stay with madlopt, and the Megarace Team driver also set a new championship record for laps led.
21-10-2003 :: Another IIL round has finished, in Michigan! And another change of championship leader! madlopt took his first absolute victory, setting a qualifying record! Congratulations are being accepted. Megarace Team driver Alex was disqualified for missing STN files. Denton was penalized for missing qualifying statistics.
15-10-2003 :: ATTENTION! For the Michigan race, download the config from the 'Download' section!!!
14-10-2003 :: ATTENTION! To all championship participants! The Michigan race requires a config, which will be in the 'Download' section tomorrow!!!
14-10-2003 :: Another IIL round has finished, at Laguna Seca! Congratulations to TILL13 on an absolute victory!!! He has surged into the championship lead, one point ahead of madlopt.
07-10-2003 :: Thanks to Alex, those running Win NT/2000/XP will now also be able to take part in the IIL. Read in the 'About the game' section how to set up DOS under Win NT/2000/XP.
07-10-2003 :: An interview with polesitter TILL13: "It is a great pity I couldn't complete the race — I had managed to find magnificent settings, and my qualifying speed proves it... the car behaved superbly in the corners, and on the straights it reached almost 200 mph!!! I think I could have gone even faster, but on a keyboard it is hard to take the corners on this track as if on rails — so mistakes are practically unavoidable... at least it is comforting that the championship leader, Megarace Team driver madlopt, failed to win, so I did not concede too many points at this round — and it was an oval, after all... so, leaving Milwaukee, I look to the future with optimism and hope to take my revenge and claw back a few points in Monterrey at Laguna Seca... 5 points is not that much."
07-10-2003 :: The third round of the championship, the Rick Mears Grand Prix of Milwaukee, has finished. The round was won by sim_tek — congratulations! sim_tek improved TILL13's result from last year by almost half a minute, while TILL13 himself set a new track record in taking pole.
02-10-2003 :: Our championship has a new entry! Team Unaired Pilots has signed up; its first driver will be the well-known racer Harder, whose Phoenix record was beaten by TILL13. The team has not yet decided on its choice of chassis, engine and tyres.
30-09-2003 :: The second round of the championship, the Al Unser Jr. Grand Prix of Long Beach, has finished; the absolute winner of the round was TILL13 — congratulations!
24-09-2003 :: An interview with NASCRAP racing driver Denton after the Atlanta race: "Unfortunately we failed to set the car up for qualifying, so last place was quite logical. In the race I decided from the start not to fill the tank completely, as the pace was rather high. The tyres wore quite evenly and the car behaved simply wonderfully. By the first pit stop the lead was 2 laps. But due to problems at the pit stop too much fuel was put in, and the car developed understeer. On top of that, a few laps before the finish I collided with Oriol Servia, which also cost time. So I am quite satisfied with second place."
23-09-2003 :: An interview with the winner of the Atlanta race: "I am insanely happy with my first clean win, and of course it is nice to start the championship on a high note. The settings were simply ideal, but my rivals got in the way a lot, and when the wave of pit stops began there was an unpleasant incident that forced me to drive down the pit lane at high speed; then I had to serve a speeding penalty. I lost about 20 seconds on all that. Otherwise the race was excellent!"
23-09-2003 :: The A J Foyt Grand Prix of Atlanta round has finished. The winner of both the race and qualifying is madlopt! Congratulations are being accepted.
22-09-2003 :: Hello — at last our site has been updated. Two carsets for the second championship have been added to the 'Download' section, and descriptions of all the game's standard tracks have appeared in the 'About the game' section. Today is the last day for sending in results of the Atlanta Grand Prix; tomorrow come the results and the start of the next Grand Prix at Long Beach, dedicated to Al Unser Jr.
01-07-2003 :: Indianapolis has appeared in the 'Download' section; after the championship ends, a separate Indy 500 will be held.
01-07-2003 :: Unfortunately, Newnapier Team was unable to take part in the race due to problems either with a tyre or with the controller, which made it impossible to retrieve the data from the storage media. The mechanics are doing everything possible to prepare the car for the next round. Officials report the debut of a new car no later than Indianapolis. It is currently testing at Nazareth and after 15 laps posted a result of 178.863.
01-07-2003 :: Attention! The 10th round of the IIL championship will take place in any case. Before the Phoenix round ends, it will be decided whether it will be held on the new Elkhart Lake track or not. If we do decide against the Elkhart Lake track, the final 10th round of the championship will be held at Portland.
01-07-2003 :: The eighth round of the championship at Laguna Seca has finished! The winner was madlopt! shurikus took the first pole position of his career, setting a new League record in the process! Congratulations!
27-06-2003 :: A new track has appeared in the 'Download' section — an improved version of Elkhart Lake (Road America). If the Elkhart Lake round does go ahead at the end of the championship, results will only be accepted from this track — the original has glitches. The Monterrey track (Fundidora Park) has also been added.
26-06-2003 :: An interview with TILL13: "In testing we managed to find ideal settings for this track, both for qualifying and for the race... That, in fact, explains our team taking another pole... in principle I think it was possible to go even faster — around 190 mph — but it didn't come together... in the race I decided to make 1 pit stop somewhere around mid-distance... thanks to a simply devilish advantage over the bots in cornering speed I could easily take 1.5–2 seconds a lap out of them... there were small problems lapping backmarkers, but before my first pit stop I managed to put everyone one full lap down, and about 10 more cars a second lap down... then I came in for my stop — entering the pit lane I failed to brake in time and overshot my box a little, had to reverse back and lost around 5 seconds on that... annoying, because those were roughly the 5 seconds I needed to come out ahead of the whole group of bots... I rejoined practically at the tail of that group — on the first laps it was quite hard to hold off the cars behind, but I held them off all the same... and once the tyres warmed up I could attack at full strength again, which I did... by lap 65 I only had about 5 cars left to pass and then the road would have been clear — I could pull away again... but at the exit of turn one somebody clipped me slightly... I was spun around; by a miracle I avoided hitting the barriers, so the car seemed to stay intact — at least there was no visible damage... all well and good, but when I came to a stop (the spinning ended) the car was facing straight against the direction of travel... and because of the specifics of my steering settings I couldn't turn around for a long time — I had to shunt back and forth... by the time I finally got moving again, my advantage over my pursuer had shrunk almost entirely, i.e. from about 21 sec to 1–2 sec... since the road ahead of me was completely clear I went all in — drove as fast as I could, and over 10 laps pulled out a 13-second gap on my pursuer, then ran into backmarkers — I decided not to risk it and simply cruised behind them for the last 5 laps... on the final, 80th lap around 5–10 cars ran out of fuel — right in the last corner... I miraculously avoided colliding with the bots... and crossed the finish line."
25-06-2003 :: An interview with race winner sim_tek: "As for the race, this time I (like my rivals, apparently) was quicker than the bots not only in qualifying but in the race too. I didn't get the glitch with being pulled into the pit lane on the first lap, but most of the field ran out of fuel on the very last lap, so they took the checkered flag in the pit lane... On the other hand, throughout the whole race not one of the bots got in my way — neither pursuers nor backmarkers. Up to lap 50 I was pulling away, stretching the gap to 11 seconds; then, as the tyres wore, I started losing time, and by the finish I was winning by about 5 seconds. During that spell I was not so much watching the gaps as watching my tyres — especially the front right — slowly but surely turn to junk. To top it off, after the checkered flag, on the victory lap, my engine caught fire! So you could say I got lucky."
24-06-2003 :: Another round has finished, in New Hampshire! The winner was championship leader sim_tek! TILL13 took his second pole in a row, and shurikus, in Alex's absence, passed him in the drivers' standings!
20-06-2003 :: Four new tracks have appeared in the 'Download' section: Atlanta, Texas, Rockingham and Lausitzring.
20-06-2003 :: A new arrival at Desperados IRT: one more driver, toomas, has been entered. The well-known rally driver will use the same chassis, engine and tyres as his team-mate TILL13.
18-06-2003 :: The sixth round of the championship has finished! TILL13 won qualifying! And surikus took his second victory! Congratulations! Megarace Team driver Alex was penalized for missing race statistics. Shurikus was penalized 10 seconds in qualifying for missing screenshots.
18-06-2003 :: A Megarace Team press release: "From the very start of the Grand Prix we knew this track was not for us. The main thing was to make it to the finish, which our drivers successfully did.
madlopt: 'I expected nothing from this race, but thanks to TILL13's problems I moved up to second place in the overall standings — and that can only please me.'"
13-06-2003 :: Screenshots from the Michigan race have been added to the 'Gallery' section.
12-06-2003 :: The DESPERADOS IRT team manager: Qualifying went without any particular problems... but in the race the rivals were simply wildly fast, and he was forced to let them all through and just cruise to the finish as best he could... the tanks were filled to the brim, so the car was very hard to control, especially on the opening laps when he had to let rivals through — the car slid in the corners and he had to shed speed so as not to hit the wall... on lap six TILL13 finally made a mistake, entering a corner too fast, and had a very serious accident... in the violent impact with the wall TILL13 lost consciousness... our whole team is deeply grateful to the marshals who pulled our driver from the wreckage of the car... TILL13 was immediately taken to hospital, where he came to... the examination revealed that the driver had suffered a number of injuries — concussion and severe bruising of the upper left leg... the driver's participation in the next championship round at Mid-Ohio is in great doubt — the doctors categorically forbid him to compete for at least two weeks... but TILL13 himself is raring to go. Which he proved in testing at Mid-Ohio, setting a magnificent time of 1:12.758. TILL13: "During the tests no particular health problems arose, so I see no reason to skip the race... besides, if I do feel unwell during the race, I can always pull off onto the grass and end my participation."
11-06-2003 :: Megarace Team driver madlopt was penalized in qualifying (−5 mph) and in the race (+1 lap) for missing qualifying screenshots and race statistics. The Megarace Team drivers declined to comment.
11-06-2003 :: Another IIL round has been held, in Michigan! The winner was sim_tek! And debutant Revelat took pole position! Congratulations!
04-06-2003 :: At the request of the championship participants, the results of the Elkhart Lake race have been annulled.
30-05-2003 :: NASCRAP racing has a new driver, Denton. He will use a Reynard chassis and Firestone tyres just like his team-mate shurikus, but the engine in his car will be different — a Mercedes.
29-05-2003 :: Starting from the Elkhart Lake round, one more team will compete in the IIL championship. Newnapier Team has entered driver Revelat, with Firestone tyres, a Honda engine and a Reynard chassis. The team is already on its way to the Elkhart Lake track.
28-05-2003 :: Shurikus, winner of the Cleveland round (NASCRAP racing): The Cleveland round was, for me as for TILL, rather tedious: unlike the Milwaukee Mile, the track is dull — nothing but braking and sliding. Hence both I and the NASCRAP racing mechanics frankly boycotted practice and the search for optimal settings. As a result, with a driver lacking seat time and a car in a "virgin" state setup-wise, my best qualifying lap was very, very weak compared to my colleagues-rivals, though it still allowed me to start from sixth. My race, unlike other championship participants', turned out simply super-calm: thanks to half-empty tanks I managed to pass all my rivals within the first two laps and build a cushion of around 8–10 seconds, then a short pit stop for fuel and left-side tyres and back onto the track, right at the tail of the top ten. I couldn't immediately recover my earlier pace and even had to fend off attacks from my pursuers (one of whom very nearly punted me off the track by shoving me from behind, but by great fortune I kept my Reynard away from ruinous contact with the concrete barrier). After a couple-three laps everything settled down, and I safely, in no particular hurry, trundled to the finish (heh — though against the backdrop of my qualifying pace, in the race I was flying like a man possessed; my personal best lap came at the end of the first stint — 1.04.482). My single priority was the desire not to smash my racing machine to dust, so as to successfully cover all 25 laps of the race, for I had, excuse me, no desire whatsoever to drive the race a second time.
28-05-2003 :: A post-race press conference with the Desperados IRT driver: "Well, at last this nightmare is over. You can't see a damn thing on this track; however much I drove around this circuit I never could find the optimal braking points... I think it is one of my least favourite tracks — after the ovals, of course... in the race I decided to try running without refuelling and put in 40 gallons of fuel; in the end that was unquestionably the wrong tactic... my pace was very low — my best race lap was 1:08.8, and on average the laps were around 1:09–1:10. On the first lap, in the first corner, I had contact with one of the race participants and got spun around; I rejoined the track 20 seconds behind the leader... from then on the deficit only grew... I tried to drive on the limit but nothing worked — the car behaved very badly... And on lap 13 I made a mistake and broke the front spoiler... while I was hobbling towards the pits, right before the pit entry the race leaders caught me — i.e. I was already a lap down... the pit stop took very long, about 25 seconds... at the stop I got the fuel amount wrong — I took on too much, 33 gallons... and my pace, despite the forced change of tactics, did not improve but stayed the same... around lap 20 I had to let the three leading drivers through and went 2 laps down... Nevertheless, thanks to Megarace Team's problems our team carried decent points away from Cleveland, so I think our championship chances are not yet lost, though catching sim_tek will be very hard... I also wouldn't write off NASCRAP racing driver shurikus — over the last two rounds he has been showing very decent speed."
27-05-2003 :: The 4th IIL round at the Cleveland airport track has finished! The winner was shurikus (NASCRAP racing)! Congratulations on a first victory!
27-05-2003 :: The entire Megarace Team line-up was unable to take part in the 4th round of the championship.
21-05-2003 :: Official and unofficial League records have been added in the 'Schedule' section.
21-05-2003 :: Screenshots from the Milwaukee round have been added to the 'Gallery' section.
20-05-2003 :: An hour in the studio with Miller Lite 250 winner TILL13: "I think everyone will agree with me if I say the race turned out very hard. In qualifying we were fairly quick, but not enough to beat Megarace Team driver madlopt; true, in practice I was a bit faster than in qualifying (182.612 mph), but even that would not have been enough to beat madlopt. In my opinion the speed he showed in qualifying is phenomenal. In the race we had genuinely very good settings, which let me run without a stop until lap 65 at a very high pace — though not without problems: for roughly the first 10 laps the car suffered from understeer, which made fast cornering very difficult for me, then everything seemed to settle down — the tyres bedded into the asphalt, and the fuel load lightened... the last 10 laps before my first and only pit stop were very hard to drive — all four tyres were by then thoroughly worn, especially the front right... I entered the pits as the leader with an 8-second cushion over my nearest pursuer, and rejoined the track last — right behind that group of backmarkers behind whom I had spent 35 laps before my stop... The remaining 15 laps were probably the hardest — the car suffered from oversteer... the probability of a mistake was very high, and I had to drive very carefully yet at the same time fast, since I had to reclaim the race lead after the wave of pit stops over the closing laps; happily everything went smoothly and on the last lap I took the lead... All in all I am very pleased with the results — all the more so because I had been sure our team had no business on the ovals... turns out I was wrong... another thing that pleases me is that this is the first winning double for Honda engines — and I hope not the last."
20-05-2003 :: Shurikus, first driver of NASCRAP racing: "Despite decent speed in qualifying, practice showed that in race conditions NASCRAP racing had little to count on. Only thanks to starting from pole, a fairly lucky tyre choice and half-empty tanks did I manage to lead for as many as 41 laps (until the fuel ran out), building a cushion of around eight seconds in that time. Thanks to that, after my pit stop I rejoined on the lead lap; however, for reasons as yet unclear I could no longer sustain my earlier pace, and so a dozen laps from the finish the leaders of the race put me a lap down... but they too soon faced a visit to the pits, so literally two laps from the finish I found myself back on the lead lap and managed to cover the full race distance — during the whole of which, astonishingly, not a single wheel or wing fell off my Reynard. A huge thank-you to everyone who helped me take the 'silver': especially Quick for practical driving advice, madlopt for kindly providing baseline setups, the engineers of Reynard and Honda, the tyre men of Firestone for superb rubber and, of course, the NASCRAP racing mechanics, who managed to patch my Reynard up to a state of near-total indestructibility — as long as you don't slam full-tilt into the barriers or rivals' cars, of course. I also think I was helped to a decent Milwaukee result by the tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of laps around all sorts of ovals racked up at the wheel of a stock car — so, presumably, on the road courses my only goal will be simply to finish."
20-05-2003 :: A press release from Simple Technologies Motorsports after the race on the "Milwaukee Mile": "We did not delude ourselves about the Nazareth win, aware that our success was caused above all by our rivals' misfortunes. Our weekend in West Allis began well; in free practice we progressed from session to session, raising our lap speed from 173 to 180 mph. Unfortunately, subsequent events showed we are not yet ready for a serious fight over a full race distance. We gambled on softer tyres and an early pit stop, hoping that fast, near-qualifying settings would help us pull away from the field and avoid further trouble. But things turned out rather differently. The speed reserve lasted only until lap 30, and what happened after the pit stop became an outright nightmare. As yet we cannot explain what was happening to the car over the final 35 laps. Let us hope that in due course we can make sense of what occurred and fight for new podium places after all."
20-05-2003 :: A Megarace Team press release: "An excellent qualifying was overshadowed by a disastrous race. The problems that plagued us at Nazareth repeated themselves, though now we are not sure the engine is to blame.

madlopt: 'The race was hard going. After lap 20 it became difficult to hold off the faster cars and I had to concede the lead to two drivers; then we caught the backmarkers and I spent a very long time battling to get past them. On lap 41 the tyres were badly worn and I came into the pits, though there was still fuel for 10–15 laps. After the exit I made a mistake and collided with a driver who was passing me; luckily the car was undamaged, but I lost a great deal of time getting back onto the track and ended up 4 laps behind the leader. Near the end of the race I made one more mistake and damaged the front wing; the car became very hard to drive and I lost another lap. I really don't know what we can count on in Cleveland. We had originally assumed we would be strongest of all on the ovals.'"
20-05-2003 :: The third round of the championship, in Milwaukee, has finished! The winner is TILL13!!! Congratulations! New driver shurikus also made an excellent debut, taking second place just five seconds behind the leader!!!
14-05-2003 :: Megarace Team has studied in detail the telemetry data from the cars of madlopt and Alex after the Nazareth race and concluded that the significant drop in the drivers' pace after 15–20 laps was caused by the engine. Initially the tyres were thought to be the culprit. The team is disappointed with the Mercedes engines. At Long Beach the championship's most reliable engine gave out after seven laps of madlopt's race, and at Nazareth the whole team had problems. Rumour has it one of the team's drivers will use Ford engines next season.
13-05-2003 :: It was a difficult weekend for Megarace Team. Nevertheless the drivers are pleased that they managed to finish and take their first pole position.

madlopt: "In qualifying I had no problems at all; we found magnificent settings — in practice before qualifying I was doing 181 mph. In qualifying I spoiled my first lap and on the second set a slightly worse time, but I still ended up on pole. The advantage was enormous. In the race things went nothing like we wanted: from the start I pulled away from my rivals and ran a second a lap faster than them, but by lap 15 the tyres had worn and the car became very hard to drive; my gap kept shrinking. For another 10 laps I managed to hold the lead, then I was passed and immediately came into the pits for tyres and fuel — but it didn't help: the car was still hard to drive and I couldn't hold back the faster rivals. If at the start of the distance I was lapping at an average of 170 mph, after the first stop I had to drop to 145 mph. Then came two mistakes while overtaking, two more visits to the pits, then I was rudely shoved onto the grass, lost time at yet another stop, and at the finish part of my wing simply fell off. All in all, a hellish race! I bow before the skill and courage of sim_tek, who stood head and shoulders above everyone in that inferno!"

Alex: "The start was so-so; I passed a few people without much trouble. While the tyres were fresh I could keep a normal pace. After about 10 laps the situation would change and I had to pit early. So it went until two-thirds distance. Then, while overtaking, I made a mistake, clipped a rival's rear wheel and flew into the concrete wall — luckily tearing off only the front wing. I decided not to change tyres this time, as they were still fresh. Leaving the pit lane, I gave it a bit too much throttle, was carried onto the grass, spun again — and then a car slammed into my side at full speed. Again I escaped with a torn-off wing, a damaged wheel and a mass of scratches on the sidepods. Into the pits again, by which point I was already 12 laps behind the leader. Then towards the end of the race something happened to the car — I couldn't reach top speed. And so I limped to the finish 15 laps down. Honestly, I didn't expect to make the finish at all; the race was extremely tense and exhausting."
13-05-2003 :: The second IIL round, the Bosch Spark Plug Grand Prix at Nazareth, has finished!!! The winner and new championship leader is sim_tek! Congratulations!!! In the drivers' national championship Ukraine and Russia scored equal points due to TILL13's absence, while Mercedes, Reynard and Firestone are successfully pulling away from their competitors in their respective standings.
12-05-2003 :: Megarace Team driver Alex (Shurik) has been penalized (+1 lap in the race) for a missing race statistics file. The driver also raced with 27 opponents instead of the 19 specified in the championship settings, but he receives no punishment for that, since the change gives no advantage (and the rules prescribe no penalty for it).
12-05-2003 :: The acceptance of Nazareth race results has been extended by a day; the final results will be up tomorrow.
12-05-2003 :: Ahead of the Nazareth race, team Desperados IRT and its driver TILL13 held a test session in Michigan. TILL13 racked up 53 laps with a best average lap speed of 230 mph. Overall TILL13 was pleased with the car's reliability, but not with its speed on the ovals — the so-called speedways and superspeedways. In his words, the team has nothing to hope for on tracks of this type, and he pins his main championship hopes on the road courses.
08-05-2003 :: Updates in the 'About the game' section.
08-05-2003 :: Team Mercury Racing has announced that it will not be able to take part in the IIL championship, giving no reasons. The championship organizers are outraged by such irresponsibility.
07-05-2003 :: A help table for the keys used in the game has been added in the 'About the game' section.
07-05-2003 :: Photos from the Long Beach race have been added to the 'Gallery' section.
07-05-2003 :: A Simple Technologies Motorsports press release after the Grand Prix of Long Beach: "This is a great day for our team. In the very first race in our history we made it to the finish and managed to score important points. The weekend was not easy: we never found sufficiently fast settings for qualifying, and before the race we had to lower the engine's maximum revs, as it was overheating during the warm-up. That hurt our speed even more. But the desired result has been achieved, and we look to the future with optimism."

sim_tek: "The most impressive moment of the race was the stretch from the green flag to the first corner, where I managed to charge from the sixth row to first position. Then, for the whole rest of the race, I had to hold off much faster rivals behind me. I managed not to make a single serious mistake, but the car's speed left much to be desired. I only gave up the lead on lap twenty, when I hesitated while lapping backmarkers. Going forward, I hope for more productive work from our race engineers."
06-05-2003 :: An interview with the winner of the first round, TILL13: "Thanks to everyone for the congratulations! Today we were clearly faster than the rest, and that pleases me; starting the season and one's career with a win is a good omen... Back in testing we managed to find good settings for this track... In qualifying I squeezed out of my car everything that could be squeezed, but I could not beat my own track record — and no wonder, since we were in the old car... The race turned out fairly dull, especially its second half... The second set of tyres was a poor one and I couldn't drive the way I had in the first half of the race... for comparison, my best laps: in the first half 54.6; after the pit stop, for the whole second half of the distance, I never got out of the 55s... but it was enough to win... In short, thanks to the team for their good work, a huge thank-you to the HONDA engine men for a magnificent engine, thanks to Reynard for an excellent chassis — I hope the new chassis will be even better — and of course thanks to the Firestone tyre men too. I hope this will not be the last victory for our magnificent alliance."
06-05-2003 :: Megarace Team is disappointed with the result of the first round. The team's drivers took the two last places, a long way behind the rest.

Alex: "The race was hellish. But I am insanely glad I managed to finish. The start was magnificent — I passed 4 people. But on lap 2 it all began. The constant chopping on the start-finish straight drove me mad. A couple of times I made my own mistakes — failed to find the braking point in time on the long straights and ended up against the wall. I visited the pits 6 times for repairs. The moments when nobody was ahead or behind me as I left the pits were the minutes when I could catch my breath :). To avoid burning out the engine I had to lower the turbo boost after 2/3 of the race, so my dear rivals kept catching me on the straights. In the end the race turned out very interesting and absorbing — I can't wait for the next one!"

madlopt: "I really have nothing to say: after seven laps of the race my engine gave up the ghost. A rather unexpected start to the season. An engine failure was the last thing we expected. If things go on like this, we'll have a rough time at Nazareth."
06-05-2003 :: THE FIRST ROUND OF THE SEASON IS OVER!!! THE WINNER OF THE RACE AND QUALIFYING AT LONG BEACH IS TILL13!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!
05-05-2003 :: From the second round (Nazareth) the championship will use the 2003 League carset; the scheme for collecting and sending results has been simplified and some points of the rules have been changed — details in the 'Rules' section.
05-05-2003 :: The acceptance of Long Beach Grand Prix results has been extended by a day. Final results tomorrow. Also tomorrow the second round begins, at Nazareth.
29-04-2003 :: The season has started!!! From today until Sunday (inclusive) the results of the Grand Prix at Long Beach are being accepted!
29-04-2003 :: Testing at the Laguna Seca circuit has finished; the report is in the 'Results' section.
29-04-2003 :: Today team Desperados IRT and its driver TILL13 continued testing at the Long Beach track. This time everything went glitch-free, and TILL13, in the new car, did beat the F-one forum record — the new record now stands at 53.943. Afterwards TILL13 said he was very pleased with the new car and that he had quickly found a common language with it. "And so, having found magnificent settings, I posted a rather good result, but not the best... I think it is far from the limit... even on that fastest lap I could have been a second quicker, maybe more — in the second- and third-to-last corners I braked too early... and the time was lost... besides, on the other sections I wasn't driving at the absolute limit either...". A fantastic time — the competitors are seriously alarmed.
29-04-2003 :: Team Desperados Indycar Racing Team and its driver TILL13 arrived at the Long Beach track for pre-race testing. The team also brought along a completely new car with a new livery, to hold a presentation and trial tests; the team hopes to use this car right after the first round of the championship. TILL13 drove only 3 laps in the new car and fell just 4 tenths short of beating the track record held by Michael Andretti — 52.4. Afterwards TILL13 expressed his delight with the new car, saying the following: "Holy s..t, now that's speed — I nearly wet my pants...". Unfortunately the telemetry could not cope with such speed, and the lap did not count.
29-04-2003 :: Team NASCRAP racing yesterday completed its pre-season tests at the Laguna Seca track; the best lap time posted by its first and only driver shurikus was a whole 1'15.023 — a great achievement for a befuddled stock-car man; however, the number of laps covered in testing, like the number of wrecked cars, defies accurate counting.
29-04-2003 :: A little-known driver from stock car racing, a certain shurikus, has decided to smash up a couple-three (hundred) of Adrian Reynard's creations; a wholesale batch of said creations has already been purchased (along with Honda engines and Firestone tyres), and team NASCRAP racing, having arrived last week for pre-season testing at Monterey, ran a series of trial sessions there. Several dozen laps were covered, a countless number of wheels and an equal number of front wings were torn off, two engines were burnt out; the best lap time — 1'22.912. Thus shurikus confirmed that he is the most realistic contender for first place... from the back.
29-04-2003 :: Motorsport enthusiast Oleksa from Kyiv (Ukraine), who has some experience driving racing cars without wings (GPL), has decided to field his private team Oleksa Engineering in the Internet IndyCar League 2003. The team has acquired a Penske chassis (used), a Ford engine (used) and GoodYear tyres. Due to a shortage of funds, Oleksa Engineering will not be able to take part in every race of the championship, and it will one hundred percent not come to the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. The search for sponsors is currently under way. Oleksa Engineering is so far the only customer of Good Year and Ford.
25-04-2003 :: Additional tracks at Fontana and Motegi have appeared in the DOWNLOAD section.
25-04-2003 :: Simple Technologies Motorsports held its final day of testing at Laguna Seca. Team driver sim_tek improved his previous result with a time of 1'13.047; after 16 laps the session was cut short by an off at turn one.
25-04-2003 :: Today, at last, team Mercury Racing filed its entry. For now the team's only driver will be its owner, Mercury. Which chassis and engine the team will use is not yet known. There is also word that the well-known driver Bob is running familiarization tests; when he will join the championship has not yet been announced.
25-04-2003 :: Megarace Team has signed a contract with Motorola. Motorola is now its title sponsor. Yesterday the team presented the new livery of madlopt's car (you can see it in the gallery). After the presentation madlopt was supposed to continue the test session, but he and Alex's race engineer turned up "dead drunk", thereby ruining the first tests for his team-mate, who had only just arrived at Laguna Seca. Hence the poor result: Alex drove 15 laps with a best time of 1'14.900.
23-04-2003 :: Today Simple Technologies Motorsports put in another day of testing; team driver sim_tek drove two sessions of 17 and 21 laps, best time 1'13.274.
23-04-2003 :: Vint Racing has announced that in the upcoming championship the team will use a Penske chassis, a Mercedes engine and Firestone tyres. It seems the suppliers at Good Year will never see their customers arrive.
23-04-2003 :: Yesterday team Desperados Indycar Racing Team put in another day of testing at Laguna Seca. Unfortunately the team's only driver TILL13 managed to complete just 18 laps with a best time of 1'13.689, after which the Honda engine on his car burnt out. Regrettably the team had not brought a spare engine to the tests and was forced to interrupt the session for the time being.
23-04-2003 :: Megarace Team arrived in Monterey yesterday and got straight to work. Team driver madlopt covered 26 laps, consistently posting times of around 1 minute 16 seconds, but on his final lap, with less than two gallons left in the tank, he managed to improve his result significantly. In the end he set what is so far the best time of the joint tests: 1'12.506.
22-04-2003 :: Team Simple Technologies Motorsports held its first day of testing at the Laguna Seca track. According to the team chief, the main result of the day was that the team's only car remained unscathed. Driver sim_tek completed 28 laps with a best result of 1:13.482; in addition, several rather spectacular spins were demonstrated at the start of the main straight. After the session the driver complained that he never managed to tame the oversteer, despite all the experiments with aerodynamic balance and suspension. He also hinted at the mediocre quality of the Firestone rubber. In reply, a company representative remarked rather sharply on what, in his humble opinion, gets in a bad dancer's way. Tomorrow, by all appearances, the tests will continue.
22-04-2003 :: Megarace Team has already set off for the joint tests at Laguna Seca. Driver madlopt is flying with the team; the second driver, Alex (Shurik), stays at the team base for now — his chassis has not yet been assembled. The delivery of Mercedes engines is delayed, and the team is disappointed by such an attitude to work from the Daimler-Chrysler concern.
22-04-2003 :: Simple Technologies Motorsports, immediately after repairing the Lola wrecked by sim_tek, set off for Monterrey to take part in the tests; the team will soon arrive at the Laguna Seca track.
22-04-2003 :: A message from the Vint Racing press service: "Team Vint Racing, despite financial difficulties, will still try to make the start of the coming season. Replacing Al Unser, who has landed in a drug rehabilitation clinic, is team owner Vintasamovar. True, rumour has it he is permanently stoned out of his mind, which is indirectly confirmed by his lap time at Cleveland — 1.24... The session ended in a horrific crash, but the 'driver' was barely hurt and was showing his fans the middle finger as they loaded him into the ambulance."
22-04-2003 :: Team Desperados Indycar Racing Team yesterday held a test session at Laguna Seca as part of Spring Training. Team driver TILL13 drove 31 laps with a best time of 1'15.387. The team reports that optimal settings were never found. The team has not yet left the circuit and is rumoured to be continuing its runs today.
21-04-2003 :: Team Desperados Indycar Racing Team has announced that its driver TILL13 will use a chassis built by Reynard Motorsport in the championship.
22-04-2003 :: From tomorrow until Sunday (April 23 to 27) the results of the joint tests (Spring Training) at the Laguna Seca track are being accepted; participation is optional! No extra files need to be sent — just send the organizer your best lap time, the number of laps and, if you wish, comments.
22-04-2003 :: Attention!!! The IIL championship starts next week; the first round will be held at Long Beach, with results accepted from 29.04 to 04.05 inclusive. Details in the 'Schedule' section. At the first round no penalties for rule violations will be applied.
21-04-2003 :: Megarace Team held tests at the Motegi superspeedway (Japan); madlopt posted a decent result of 242.980 mph. A day later the team relocated to Michigan, where team driver madlopt drove 20 laps, best lap 238.323 mph. Rumour has it engine problems prevented madlopt from covering more laps. Team representatives said that in Michigan they were working on qualifying settings. The second team driver Alex (Shurik) is meanwhile preparing for his upcoming test session.

Team Simple Technologies Motorsports has begun its test programme. The eyes of the few journalists present were met by a white Lola without sponsor logos. According to intelligence, the team uses Mercedes engines and Firestone tyres. On the two-mile superspeedway in Brooklyn, Michigan, the team's only car so far drove a mere 60 or so laps with a best result of 232.866 mph, after which it was smashed to pieces by the team's first and so far only driver sim_tek. The team management refrained from comment.

Rumour has it that after the first races the well-known racers Desavor and Bob will join the championship. The participation of the famed rally driver Black Alex is also possible.
